Persephone is the Greek goddess of Spring and the Underworld, Queen of the Dead and all chthonic mysteries. She also brings the knowledge of hidden realms to the surface world. As her bright self, she is daughter to the agricultural goddess Demeter, and her darker self is wife to Hades, King of the Underworld.
The myth by which Persephone is known best establishes the cycles of the seasons. When Persephone is carried away into the Underworld by Hades, Demeter’s grief over the loss of her daughter causes the first winter on Earth. From Persephone’s point of view we can see a young woman making her personality distinction from her very powerful mother. In the Underworld she comes of age to become Queen of her own realm. Eventually, the gods involved strike a bargain. Persephone emerges from the realm of the Dead, bringing Spring with the joy of her reunion with Demeter. In the dark months of winter she rules with her King. This oil devoted to Demeter does have synthetic fragrances in it. I attempt to pay tribute to both aspects of the goddess of Spring and the Dead.
