The city of Athens is named for the powerful Goddess, Athene. I don't really go for the story of Athene being born of Zeus's head with no mother. It sounds like a patriarchal revision of an older tale. Warrior goddess, diplomat, goddess of the urban environment, Athena is re-represented under different guises far and wide, in her role as goddess of law and civic life. If you are an urban pagan, she is probably one of your patronesses. The Owl is her sacred animal, and the Olive is her sacred tree, which is why Athena oil is one of the few Natural Magick deity oils which contains Olive oil.
While being "born" fully formed from Zeus' head might make Athene seem like a motherless creation of the thoughts of a male, it also emphasizes her intellectual "all head" nature. This is also seems to be reflected in the head of Medusa which Athena wears on her shield. Some researchers have suggested that Medusa is actually an earlier African version of Athena.
Athene oil smells very chaste and intellectual. It would be a good scent to wear whenever dealing with elected officials, government representatives of any sort, and for works regarding legal and contractual issues, or if you are yourself a civil servant or bureaucrat. Athene is given correspondences in 777 by Aleister Crowley, and I use a number of these in my devotional formula to Athene.
